With the current economic and financial condition, going to college poses a bigger challenge to the youth. Earning a living is hard enough, so getting through college nowadays seems like a faraway dream.
There are ways on how to get extra funds for college matriculation. There are federal government grants, left handed scholarships, and student loans to help you out. Federal grants are usually reserved to the financially challenged. There are lots of requirements in order to qualify and most of these grants are on a first come first serve basis. The best example is the Pell Grant which is granted based on Financial Need computation derived from your family’s salary and the cost of attendance.
Student loans on the other hand are loans that can be repaid after college. There are 3 major categories for student loans, federally subsidized, unsubsidized sponsored by the government and private loans. In order to qualify, there are several factors to consider such as income level of the student and parents and other financial considerations. The usual interest rate is 6% and is non-negotiable. Repayment starts usually six months to a year after a student leaves school, regardless if he or she graduates from the course.
Another type of student aid is scholarships. Private institutions and Universities offer these based on a screening process. Different types of scholarship are need based, merit based, student specific, and career specific scholarships. Every scholarship has its own requirement. Top notch jocks are offered full scholarships for their contribution in the school’s academic program. Intelligent students are awarded scholarships for their academic capabilities. However, for the normal guys, there are weird scholarships as well.
With weird scholarships, the category is based on an unusual or unique trait or skill. There are duck calling, skate board, potato industry, duct tape and left handed scholarships. Weird as they come, there are a lot if you browse the web and they give a good deal of tuition money.
